Certificates

When it comes to diamonds, a little knowledge can be dangerous…

Your diamond should have a specific cut, color, clarity and carat weight assigned to it by an Independent Gemological Laboratory and recorded on a Diamond Grading Certificate. However, there are many laboratories grading diamonds and some are more accurate than others. As every professional diamond buyer can tell you there is absolutely no substitute for viewing the diamond in a proper grading environment with the help of a Graduate Gemologist or a Certified Diamontologist.

A recent survey showed that many people were not 100% certain that their certificate matched their diamond, that the certificate was valid or even if the diamond was genuine. Unfortunately, just like there are unscrupulous stores, it is even more risky to purchase something as valuable as a diamond sight unseen from a company you know little or nothing about.

Certificates often give people a false sense of security. Certificates are important to have because they usually give you a general idea of a diamonds quality, but just like a drivers license gives you a brief description of a person, it doesn’t come close to telling us enough to know and understand that person. Likewise, a Lab Certificate often lacks critical information pertaining to the beauty of a diamond.

For example, a Lab Certificate does not tell you about the crystal structure of the rough diamond that the finished diamond came from. And yet a diamonds crystal structure can have a dramatic impact on the beauty and the brilliance of a diamond. This is just one more reason why it is imperative to see a diamond in person using the proper equipment and with the guidance of a Gemologist or Diamontologist and comparing it to other diamonds before you purchase it.

Smartdiamond.com eliminates the risk of buying a diamond sight unseen. With Smartdiamond.com you see the diamond BEFORE you buy it. Our Graduate Gemologists or Certified Diamontologists will give you honest answers, congratulating you on a great find or suggesting to you that you may want to keep looking.
